Chapter History

The Iota Zeta Chapter has a rich history of service and support in the Indianapolis community. In the spring of 1930, the late Mistresses Flora Bates, Ruth Bailey and Carolyn Cain with the assistance of Mr. Elder W. Diggs, principal of School 42, met in an effort to organize a chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. This group of women, along with Mr. Diggs, made contact with Eliza Baker (president of Teacher's College and superintendent of Indianapolis Kindergarten) to assist in their efforts. These determined and courageous women succeeded in their effort on June 30, 1931 when the Iota Zeta Chapter was chartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Charter members were the late Sorors Ruth Bailey, Carolyn Cain, Cleo Brock, Marie Booth Hill, Edna Osborne and Adalaide Riley. Chartered just after the Great Depression of the 1930's, times were difficult for all in America - not excluding Zeta. Since membership and participation is considered a luxury and not a necessity, many chapters suffered but Iota Zeta persevered.

The Iota Zeta Chapter has given support to various projects that directly impact the community for well over 75 years! It is our mission to continue that legacy.
